It’s your birthday. Lovely.

Now you just have to decide what you’re actually doing for it.

Dinner? Party? Something small at home? And somehow “something small” can very quickly become food, cake, decorations, drinks, music, pictures and a guest list that keeps growing because apparently everyone wants to bring someone.

So before all that, decide what you actually want.

It really doesn’t have to be that deep

Pinterest and TikTok are great until you start thinking your 17th birthday needs a custom dance floor and 400 roses.

It doesn’t.

A birthday can literally be your favourite people, good food, a nice cake and somewhere you can take good pictures. If you want to go all out, obviously go all out. But don’t add things just because you feel like they’re what a birthday is supposed to have.

Half the time, the random little things are what people remember anyway.

Very important: food

You can forget a lot of things.

Please don’t forget to feed people.

You also don’t need a menu with twelve different options. Think about who’s coming, how many people there are and what they’ll actually eat.

Then there’s the cake.

Personally, we think something that looks nice and actually gets finished is better than a massive cake that spends the whole party being photographed.

And little treats are always a good idea. Cookies, muffins, brownies, banana bread… things people can casually pick up while pretending they haven’t already had two.

Don’t become the event planner at your own birthday

This is probably the biggest one.

If you spend your entire birthday checking whether the food has arrived, rearranging things and answering “where should I put this?” every five minutes, you’re not really having a birthday anymore. You’re working.

Plan the important things beforehand and let other people help.
