Cute in Theory
Updated: Aug 24
You have an idea.
It’s cute. Like, really cute.
You’ve seen the pictures, saved approximately 46 TikToks and already know exactly how everything is supposed to look.
There is just one tiny issue.
You now have to actually do it.
Pinterest has lied to us
Not completely.
But slightly.
Because why does “simple DIY party decor” require a glue gun, three hours, seventeen pieces of cardboard and a level of patience I simply do not have?
Everything looks extremely doable when someone else has already done it.
A massive balloon setup? Cute.
Making all the desserts yourself? Cute.
Handwritten name cards for every guest? Very cute.
Doing all three on the morning of the party?
Interesting decision.
Then there's the budget
This is where things get funny.
You start with a perfectly reasonable amount.
Then it’s:
“Oh, this is only ₦5,000 extra.”
And then another ₦3,000.
Then ₦7,500.
Then delivery.
Then apparently we need candles.
And somehow all the little “extras” have formed their own separate budget.
This is why it helps to decide what you actually care about.
If the cake is important to you, spend more of your budget there. If you really want good pictures, focus on the setup. If you just want everybody to eat well, you probably don't need to spend half your money decorating a wall.
Not everything needs to be the main character.
DIY has limits
I love doing things myself.
Until I don't.
There’s a point where saving money stops being worth sitting on your bedroom floor at 1:14am cutting tiny pieces of ribbon.
Some things? Absolutely DIY.
Other things? Please give them to somebody else.
Your sanity is also part of the budget.
But sometimes it actually works
And this is the annoying part.
Sometimes the idea that sounded slightly ridiculous comes together perfectly.
The decorations cooperate. The food looks good. Everyone shows up. Somebody takes the picture.
Suddenly all the screenshots, shopping lists and “wait, I have an idea” messages were worth it.
So yes, do the cute idea.
Just maybe figure out how you're actually going to pull it off before buying 200 tiny bows.
Cute in theory is nice.
Cute in real life is better.
